Ontological Argument for religious faith Flashcards
POint 1- In what text does Anselm refer to the statement ‘fire is water’, explain how this relates to the ontological argument?
Proslogium 4, The words in the statement can be understood, but someone who understands fire and water would not understand that fire is water. Applies to the fool saying ‘there is no God’ as once you understand God is than which a ‘greater being cannot be conceived’, must understand he exists’. The fool does not have an adequate concept of God to except his existence.
Crit point 1- What is the issue with Anselm’s definition of ‘than which nothing greater can be conceived’?
(learn objections)- doesnt tell you if God exists in reality. Unuseful for atheists.
Crit point 1- What is issue with Anselm stating that atheists do not have an adequate concept of God?
The arguement does not aid their lack of ‘concept’, need to have faith before the argument can affect faith positively, through religious experience.
