Ontological argument Flashcards
1
Q
What’s Anselm’s ontological argument?
A
“and surely that than which nothing greater can be conceived cannot exist in the understanding alone”
2
Q
What is Anselm’s argument in Proslogion 2?
A
- God= greatest conceivable being
- Existing in reality > existing in mind
- therefore God must exist (or He wouldn’t be the greatest)
3

Gaunilo’s ‘perfect island’ criticism
A
You can’t define things into existence (ie. a perfect island doesn’t exist js bc we imagined it)
4

How does Kant critique the ontological argument
A
“existence is not a predicate” - existence adds no new properties
5
Q
what example does Kant give
A
eg. £100 in mind vs pocket is same except in existence
