Q

First form of Anslem’s argument (in 4 points)

A

1: We cannot conceive any greater being than G-d
2: His existence must therefore be all-perfect
3: If He is all perfect He must not be contingent
4: Since we can conceive the idea of an unchanging all perfect being, He must exist

Q

Second form of Anslem’s argument (in 6 points)

A

1: Nothing greater can exist than G-d
2: An unchanging being is greater that a contingent being
3: If G-d was contingent, a greater being could then be imagined as existing
4: This being would then be greater than G-d
5: Since nothing can be greater than G-d, He must be unchanging
6: He must therefore exist out of necessity

Q

What did Guanilo say + his example

A

He said it was logically absurd to define G-d into reality
- The perfect island is one which no greater can exist
- Any island which doesn’t exist can’t be the perfect island as it does not exit
- Since one can conceive of such an island, it must therefore exist

The fact that there is no perfect island means G-ds existence is flawed

Q

Q

Descartes on Kant

A

-if you have a triangle, you have 3 sides
-if you don’t have a triangle you don’t have 3 sides
-if you accept there is a G-d it’s logical to accept His existence is necessary
-but you don’t have to accept that there is a G-d
