Ontological Argument Flashcards
Inductive arguments
Inductive arguments are probabilistic ( truth of its conclusion cannot be guaranteed by the truth of its premise)
Deductive arguments
Intend to guarantee the truth of the conclusion. If the premises of the argument are true, then the conclusion must be true
Ontos
The argument is based on the claim that god’s existence can be deduced from his definition-once god is correctly defined there can be no doubt that he exists
Anselm’s definition of god
‘’God is a being than which nothing greater can be conceived”
Gaunilo’s criticism
His criticism uses a parody of anselm’s argument,he gave an ontological argument of a perfect island . Gaunilo uses the argument method ruductio ad.absurdum
Anselm’s defense
Islands are contingent, god is necessary he argues that u cannot compare god to an island necessary existence is only a predicate of god , and not of things
Descartes argument
God Is defined as the supremely perfect being. He must therefore posses all the perfect predicates of omnipotence, omniscience, omnibenevolence
