Q

Perfect island objection +
response.

A

He replaces god with an island. This suggests the arguemnt is unsound because it can only being applied specifically to god. Anselm responds by saying that ontological arguemtns asa whole only work for god. Everyone would have a diffeent idea of the perfect island but everyone has the same idea of a god.

A

P1:Nothing distinctly conceivable implies a contradiction.
P2:Anything that we can conceive of as aexistnt, we ca conceive of as non existnat.

Q

Existence is not a predicate

A

P1:If ‘god doesnt exist’ is a contradiction, then ‘god exists’ is an analytic truth.
P2:If ‘god exists’ is an analytic truth, then existence is part of the concept of god.
P3: Existnec is not a pedicate, soemthing that can be added to another concept.
C1:Therefore, existence is not part of the concept of god.
C2:Theefore, ‘god exists’ is not an analytic truth.
C3:Therefore ‘god doesnt ecist’ is not a contradiction.
C4:Therefore, ontological arguments cannot prove that god exists.

Q

Anselm/Malcolm ontological argument:

A

P1: Eithe god exits or he doesnt.
P2:God cannot come into existence or go out of existence.
P3:If god exits, god cannot cease to exist
C1:Theefore, if god exists, gods existence is neccessary.
P4:If god does not exist, his essence is impossible.
C2:Therefore, if god doesnt exist, his existence is impossible.
C3: Therefore, gods existencew is either neccessary of impossible.
Malcolms addition:
P5:Gods existence is impossible pnly if the conceot of him is seld-contradictory
P6:The concept of god is not self-contradictory.
C4: Theefore, gods existence is not impossible
C5: Therefore, gods existence is neccessary.
