Ontological Flashcards
What is this argument
A priori
Where did Anselm write his argument?
Proslogians 2 and 3
What are they based on
Psalm (fool says that there is no God)
What is the quote
‘That than which no greater can be conceived’
Only in…
…
Intellectu
Ré
What is his argument
Better to exist in intellectu and in re than just in intellectu, and God is greatest thing imaginable he must exist in more than in re otherwise something greater = exists in intellectu and in re
Descartes challenges
‘On behalf of fool’
Using Anselm’s logic the greatest island i could imagine must exists, but this is not the case, therefore it works the same for God, just because you can picture the greatest thing it does not mean it exists
What does Anselm respond with…
Island is contingent
God is necessary as greater to be necessary than contingent
Cannot compare an island to God
Descartes ontological argument
PREDICATES
Innate moral awareness stamped on us
Predicates of perfection = existence
‘God exists’ = analytic statement
Triangle = predicates
Take away predicates is not God so he must have them therefore must exist
Kants response to ontological
Existence is not predicate nor is perfection
100 thallers
If he does exists to remove one = illogical
If he does not exist = no predicates = no contradiction = does not have to exist
Malcolm’s ontological argument
Does not exists cannot come into existence as impossible
Good exists impossible to go out of existence = necessary
Not impossible therefore necessary otherwise logical contradiction
