what is the internet?
a global computer network made up of interconnected computer networks - these are called routers
what is the web?
collection of info accessible through the internet. use browsers to access documents + web pages. navigation occurs through hyperlinks.

what is the world wide web?
an application that runs on the internet - vast network of linked hypertext files stored on computers, stored with info on a huge variety of subjects.
what does it mean to be online?
be connected to the internet and having access to it
what is a data center?
cables and routers as the core of the internet- without these we wouldn’t have access to any data needing apps- eg TikTok, Pinterest
why do we need cables?
to transfer data to other countries and continents
what are the benefits of having cables under the sea?
allows us to transfer the data rapidly to further places and is less costly than for example, satellite internet.

what is a search engine?
a computer program with a graphical user interface for displaying and navigating between web pages
how can we make searching on the web easier?
- be specific
- use quotation marks eg “chocolate” “soap”
- use appropriate search engines
- basic math to narrow down results
- use advanced tools
what does BING stand for?
Because It’s Not Google
what do search engines do?
build up an index of results so that when someone searches something up they get related results
what is critical thinking?
the process of thinking carefully about a subject or idea without allowing feelings or opinions to get in the way
what is a hidden agenda?
people/web pages trying to persuade/influence your opinions and is not always obvious.
how can you gain trust in websites?
- comparing with other websites
- have a good history
- background check
what are some ways of critical thinking?
- check the date of the info
- stay away from eerie people online
- never spread false information
- talk to someone
- take in account that anyone could be able to edit the website
- figure out the tone
- fact and opinion
how is image search useful?
o find identity of a person o find a similar image o check to see it art was produced by that person o check if item is available to buy o find out what something is o picture of food o lost photo
what does copyright © mean?
you must get permission from the people who own the copy rights to use the work - the people or company that owns the copyrighted work have the right to copy the creative work
example of copyrighted works?
- movies
- tv shows
- video games
- music
what is the public domain?
+ anyone is free to use this and copy it anywhere. permission NOT needed
what is a creative commons licence cc ?
makes it easier to share info and clearly explain what a person can and can’t do with someone else’s creative work
what is a variable?
a container in an algorithm that can be used to store data that changes as the algorithm runs- all of these have identifiers, data types + values
what is a sequence?
specific order in which instructions are completed in an algorithm
