OneNote Test 1 Flashcards
What are benefits of bottom-up methods? cons?
- better purity control/less contamination
- reproductability is better
cons: limited particle size
What are benefits of top-down methods? Cons?
Benefit: lower cost bc of the yield
con: size limit (technical/common ceramics)
What are pros and cons of dry routes?
pros: cheaper, easy to automate, works for any composition
cons: no agglomerate control, nothing to control microstructure, not as compelx shapes, microstructure simpler
What are pros and cons of plastic routes?
pros: complex shapes, quick
cons: have to remove the polymer after, costly
What are some processing methods used to create dense (monolithic) microstructures?
uniaxial, isostatic
What are advantages and disadvantages of additive manufacturing?
advantages
1. whatever shape
2. altering properties
disadvantages
1. bonding between layers
2. longer to form & sometimes weaker
3. sintering
4. removing additives
What size particles do you want for porous ceramics?
small so they can completely surround the porogen
Do ceramics corrode?
yes, just at higher T and harsher conditions
