oncology Flashcards
what is Folic acid antagonism?
because folic acids is needed to help cell divide through copying DNA, so the cell doesnt replicate/divde and eventually dies off
what is Purine antagonists?
Interrupts metabolic pathways of purine nucleotides -> interrupts DNA/RNA synthesis -> tumour cells die
what is pyrimidine antagonist?
interrupts metabolic pathways of pyrimidine bases -> interrupts DNA/RNA synthesis
what are mitotic inhibitors?
works to slow down cell division and can work during any phase of mitosis
usually used for solid tumours or hematological malignancies
what are topoimerase 1 inhibitors?
used to treat ovarian and colorectal cancer by inhibiting proper DNA function
what is antineoplastic enzymes?
Synthesized using cultures of bacteria and recombinant DNA technology. can be used for all cancers
what is Alkylating Drugs?
Used to treat various types of cancer by preventing cancer cells from reproducing
what is cytotoxic antibiotics?
Natural substances produced by the mould Streptomyces (semi synthetics also used)
Bone marrow suppression & HF is common with toxicity
Mechanism of action: cell cycle non-specific and blocks DNA synthesis
what are hormonal antineoplastics?
This therapy is used to
oppose the effects of hormones.
block the body’s sex hormone receptors
used for many cancers such as breast and prostate cancer
you would want to take baseline vitals before administering
what are the 4 purines?
Adenine
Guanine
Hypoxanthine
Xanthine
