In which cancers does spinal cord compression commonly present?
A
Lung, breast and prostate cancer

How does spinal compression usually occur in cancer?
A
This is usually due to extradural compression as a result of vertebral body masses

What are the clinical features of neoplastic spinal cord compression?
A
- Back pain - most commonly the earliest sign
- Leg weakness
- Neurological signs - Lesions above L1 usually cause UMN signs in the legs and sensory changes. Below L1 usually cause LMN signs and perianal numbness

How would you investigate neoplastic spinal cord compression?
A
An urgent MRI must be carried out within 24 hours

What is the management for neoplastic spinal cord compression?
A
- Dexamethasone
* Urgent Oncological review for consideration of radiotherapy/surgery
