Områder Flashcards
What are the different glacial areas?
Periglacial
Proglacial
Subglacial
Englacial
Subraglacial
Where is periglacial?
It is the furthest zone from the glacier, in front of the proglacial zone
Where is the proglacial zone?
It is right in front of the glacier, with the periglacial zone to one side and ice contact to the other
Where is the subglacial zone?
It is the basal zone. The bottom of the glacier
Underneath the glacier???
Where is the englacial zone?
Inside the glacier
Where is the subraglacial zone?
On top of the glacier
What are the different types of moraines?
- Lateral moraine - on the side of the glacier
- Medial moraine - moraine in the middle (still parallel) from merging of lateral moraines
- End moraine - in front of the glacier
- Terminal moraine - the furthest end moraine
What are the similarities between glaciolacustrine and glaciomarine environments?
- Mechanisms of sediment release
- sedimentation in water
- rhythmic sedimentation
- wave action (down to 20m)
- icebergs
- Dropstones
What are the differences between glaciolacustrine and glaciomarine environments?
(Marine vs. Lacustrine)
- Saltwater vs. Freshwater (density)
- global basins vs. Local
- tidal influence vs. None
- global current pattern vs. Local
- stratification mainly due to salinity and temp. Diff. Vs. Temp. Diff.
- lots of biota vs. Less biota
- lots suspended sediment plumes vs. Few
- flocculation vs. Varves
How is the periglacial zone defined, and what does this mean?
It is the domain of frost climate.
This means the effects of ground frost (permafrost), and also other processes affected by frost climate
