OMM Research Flashcards
Where was the first OMM research institute located?
Texas School of Osteopathic Medicine
What were the research contributions of Louisa Burns, DO?
Induced bony lesions in animals and documented their physiologic effects on organs.
“The osteopathic lesion”
Viscero-somatic Reflexes
Who studied with Louisa Burns and provided internal validation for her research?
Wilbur Cole, DO
What were the research contributions of John Denslow, DO?
Used EMG to study the effects of somatic dysfunction on muscle reflexes and the ANS
Who developed the “facilitated segment”? Who did he work on this with?
Irvin Korr, PhD; Denslow
What were the research contributions of William Johnston, DO?
Best inter-examiner reliability studies to date; also validity and viscerosomatic reflex studies
What are some of the challenges to researching OMM?
1) Objective findings that can only be appreciated by subjective experience
2) variability in the skills of those applying OMM
3) Resources. required to administer OMT to enough patients to achieve a well powered study
4) Randomized controlled trials work well for studying small number of known variables that are easily measured
What was found in study of the effect of OMT on middle ear effusion following AOM in young children?
Standardized OMT protocol administered adjunctively with standard care for patients with AOM may result in faster resolution of MEE following AOM than standard treatment alone.
What was found in the st udy of adjuvant lymphatic OMT in patients with LE ulcers?
Adjunctive OMT protocol may have reduced edema and reversed the trend of wound growth in patients with venous stasis ulcers.
What was found in the study of the osteopathic approach to chronic sinusitis?
After OMT, utilizing direct pressure and sinus drainage technique, the overall sinus pain/congestion for all patients improved. All 15 patients reported feeling more relaxed after OMT.
What was found in the study of lumbar spinous processes using multiple bony landmarks in order to measure inter-examiner reliability?
Identification of lumbar spinous processes using multiple landmarks was more accurate than previously reported values. However, accuracy was dependent on examiner experience, presence of anatomical anomalies, and participant characteristics.
What was found in the analysis of hospital LOS, ventilator-dependent respiratory failure rate, and in-hospital mortality rate in regards to OMM used on elderly pneumonia patients?
Adjunctive OMT for pneumonia reduced LOS in adults aged 50-74 and lowered in-hospital mortality rates in adults aged 75 and older.
What were the results of the PROMOTE study?
OMT protocol given during the third trimester o pregnancy is safe with regard to labor and delivery outcomes.
What was found in the study of tolerance of rib raising among hospitalized patients?
Rib raising was well tolerated by the majority of patients.
What was found in the study measuring how OMT reduced LOS and costs in preterm infants?
OMT was clinically effective in reducing LOS and costs in a large population of preterm infants.
