OMM Practical I Flashcards

1
Q

Suboccipital Tension Release

A

Used for tension headaches, to prepare for cervical correction, to assess and stretch dural attachments at C2, C3, occiput

Direct pressure anteriorly, superiorly under suboccipital area up to the nuchal ridge

Posterior Cervical Soft Tissue

A

Used for treatment of short restrictor muscles of the cervical spine

Rhythmically stretch/compress soft tissue b/t spinous and articular processes of cervical vertebrae

Q

Cervical Stretching

A

Used to address long restrictor muscles of c-spine, to stretch myofascial elements of cervical and upper thoracic regions, to promote venous and lymphatic drainage of the tissues.

Can hold in position until release is felt or use muscle energy

Flexion and Sidebending/Rotation

Q

Rib Raising

Lateral Recumbent vs Supine

A

Used to aid respiration (asthma), aid circulation in pts w/ congestion (pneumonia, COPD, CV, structural injury), pre/post op care (atelectasis)

Ask pt if they have shoulder issues
Lateral Recumbent: pt cups ears and lays on side, physician moves rib angles anterior and lateral w/ rhythmic motion. Complete once release of tissues is felt
Supine: Physicians forearms on table to act as conuterforce

Q

Prone Thoracic Perpendicular Stretch

A

Used to laterally stretch fascial restrictions w/in paravertebral musculature of thoracic spine and to free up any rib or thoracic restrictions

Thumb and thenar eminence b/t spinous and transverse processes over rector spinae mass. Entire length of thoracic spine. Pressure held for 3sec.

Q

Pectoral Traction

A

Used to increase the A-P diameter of the thorax, to improve venous and lymphatic drainage of the thorax, to release tension in clavi-pecteoral fascia, drain anterior axillary fold edema from upper extremity, provide drainage from head and neck

Anterior axillary fossa
Pt is supine w/ knees flexed - inhale deeply, muscle energy techniques

Q

Clavi-Pectoral Stretch

A

Used to drain head/neck from edema caused by (tonsillitis, pharyngitis), tx anterior/rounded shoulders, to be completed after inlet has been addressed

Physician places thenar eminences on anterior/superior shoulders at level of AC joint/humerous
10lbs of force - 20secs

Q

Thoracolumbar Soft Tissue - Prone

A

Used to relax paravertebral and quadratus lumborum musculature, to free up motion of ribs 11/12, therapeutic and diagnostic, for somatic and visceral dysfunctions, special attention may be given to those areas overlying sympathetic nerve supply to organs physician wishes to affect thru reflex mechanisms

Thoracolumbar Soft Tissue - Supine

Knees flexed- move knees away, paravertebral musculature laterally and anteriorly
Completion noted by softening of tissues or increased ROM

Q

Ischial Tuberosity Spread

A

Used to release fascia of pelvis, tx sacrum, separate sacroiliac joints and allow for better motion b/t sacrum and innominates, helps sacrum seat itself b/t innominates which may reduce forward sacral torsions, improves function of urogenital-pelvic diaphragm, decongest pelvis and improve lower extremity drainage, can treat constipation, hemorrhoids

Sacral Rocking

A

Used to improve sacral respiratory motion, to relieve strains of sacral fascia and related surrounding structures, to enhance primary resp mechanism, improve function of urogenital pelvic diaphragm, tx constipation

Breathe deeply, apex of sacrum rocked anterior on inhalation while base is directed posterior. Applied after total body tx and for 1-2mins

Q

Myofascial Shoulder Release via Scapular Lift

A

Used to release myofascial restrictions of the shoulder girdle, to address rib dysfunctions.

Pt is in lateral recumbent position w/ arm behind back. Deep breath and physician used muscle energy and lifts scapula toward celing, depress shoulder w/ other hand

Q

Trapezius Pinch

A

Used to decrease congestion w/in thoracic inlet, ease tension w/in trap muscle, assist in tx of headaches

Lobster claw, move medially/laterally along bulk of muscle. Tx complete when entire length of muscle is w/o restrictions
