Q

Why did parliamentarians like Cromwell?

A

Oliver Cromwell was the leader of the parliamentarian army and became Lord Protector when England was a republic country between 1649 to 1660. Additionally, after the Civil War, Cromwell’s parliament took away land owned by the royal family and the Church and gave it to the poorer men who had fought for parliament during the wars.

Q

What was another reason Cromwell was unpopular?

A

Despite cromwell trying many different ways of ruling, people became keen to have a king again. They asked cromwell to become the king which he refused but continued to take extra powers. Many of cromwell’s enemies said that he was greedy and had taken all of the power of the king, yet just without the name.

Q

My conclusion:

A

In September 1658, cromwell died. His legacy and reputation is still a source of disagreement and debate - on the one hand cromwell is seen as a defender of parliament and freedom but on the other he is seen as a inhuman monster and hypocritical tyrant who ruled with violence instead of liberality.
