Describe the process of olfaction.

A
  • Sent to high cortical areas via the mitral cells which are the output neurons in the olfactory bulb.
  • In then arrives at the Piriform cortex (primary olfactory area) and orbitofrontal cortex (secondary olfaction area) and it is a short distance from the amygdala and all the other pathways.
  • Does not involve the thalamus (which is a relay station needed for all other senses.
