EU
A union created with the intention of retaining peace in a war-torn and divided continent after World War II.
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - An intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American + European countries.
WTO
World Trade Organisation - Global international organisation dealing with rules of trade between nations with the goal of helping producers of goods / exporters and importers with their businesses
UN
Formed after the end of WWII by 51 countries to maintain peace & security, develop nations, cooperate to solve economic, social, cultural, humanitarian international problems.
Oligarchy
Small group of people who have control of a country or organisation (Russia, China & North Korea)
Anarchy
Idea that government is unnecessary and harmful- a society without a government who desire to live in anarchy like our ancestors
Monarchy
Country ruled by a monarch- a king or queen. In constitutional monarchy- their power is limited (Queen of England), but in absolute monarchy, they have unlimited power
Democracy
A country in which people choose their rulers by voting for them in elections. Each citizen is entitled to vote and take part in decisions.
Fascism
Goal: make the nation stronger, more powerful, larger & more successful- will use any means necessary to achieve that goal: extreme support of a natural leader, believing one group is a victim, justifying any behaviour against the group’s enemies.
Communism
Higher and more advanced form of socialism. It is based on common ownership and promotes an egalitarian, classless and stateless society.
Socialism
Economic system where everyone in society equally owns the factors of production. Ownership is acquired through a democratically elected government. (Work long hours to receive more) Everyone gets based on what they have contributed.
Nationalism
Promotion of the interests of a nation with the aim of gaining/maintaining the nation’s self governance over its homeland. Each nation should govern itself- free from outside interference. Promotes belief in a shared history and seeks to preserve traditional culture.
Privatisation
Transfer of ownership, property & business from the government to the private sector. Government ceases to be the owner of entity or business.
Nationalisation
The transfer of ownership, property and business from private owners to public ownership of a national government or state.
The UK
Sovereign country including Northern Ireland, the island of Great Britain –> England, Scotland and Wales.
Great Britain
Island containing–> England, Scotland & Wales
Brexit
Britain wants to leave the EU- merging words Britain and exit to get Brexit.
The Troubles
Conflict in Northern Ireland in 1960s that ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Protestants wanted Northern Ireland to remain with UK- Catholics wanted Northern Ireland to leave the UK and join a united Ireland
