A

A clan establishes social order, and is named after animals found in nature, each animal has a trait or characteristic and children were encouraged to follow that trait. Red Lake has 7 clans on their flag but have many more clans within their band.

  1. Was a turtle shaped Island, South of Montreal and on the Ottawa River. There was a dream or vision of a river that flowed in the direction where the sun sets, the Ottawa River is the only place where the river runs west.
  2. The place of Animikii waa boo, The place of Thunder Water, describes Niagra Falls.
  3. Detroit - A place where two great bodies of water are connected by a thin, narrow river, this river is described as a “Deep and fast ribbon of water that slices through the land like a knife.” Several life’s were lost because the current was very strong.
  4. Manitoulin Island - was considered the capital of the Ojibwe Nation, It was here that the Ojibwe spent the most time. It was an Ideal place for Trading and was a main depot for theOjibwe.
  5. Saulte Ste. Marie - Was another major trading center it was here where the Ojibwe split into two groups, one group went North around Lake Superior and the other group went South around the Lake, Those that went North settled in Northern Minnesota, Red Lakers.
  6. Duluth Minnesota settling near Spirit Mountain, the two groups met up here. Those that traveled north around the lake traveled further into MN and settled in those areas.
  7. Madeline Island - was the 7th and final resting place of the Megis shell.
