Sternocleidomastoid
ORIGIN : 2 heads; manubrium of sternum and clavicle
INSERTION : mastoid process of temporal bone
ACTION : flexes and rotates cervical vertebral column
Iliocostalis group
ACTION : extends and laterally flexes vertebral column, head, and neck
Longissimus group
ACTION : extends and laterally flexes vertebral column, head and neck
Spinalis group
ACTION : extends and laterally flexes vertebral column, head, and neck
Intertransversarii
ORIGIN : transverse process of vertebrae
INSERTION : transverse process of vertebra above
ACTION : laterally flexes vertebral column
Interspinales
ORIGIN : spinous process of vertebra
INSERTION : spinous process of vertebra above
ACTION : extends vertebral column
Rectus abdominis
ORIGIN : pubic crest
INSERTION : xiphoid process and costal cartilage of ribs 5-7
ACTION : compress abdominopelvic cavity and flexes vertebral column
External oblique
ORIGIN : lower 8 ribs
INSERTION : linea alba and anterior iliac crest
ACTION : compress abdominopelvic cavity, flexes and rotates vertebral column
Internal oblique
ORIGIN : inguinal ligament, iliac crest, and lumbodorsal fascia
INSERTION : linea alba, pubic crest, and lower ribs
ACTION: compresses abdominopelvic cavity, flexes and rotates vertebral column
External intercostals
ORIGIN : inferior border of each ribs
INSERTION : superior border of rib below
ACTION : elevates ribs
Transverse abdominis
ORIGIN : thoracolumbar facia, iliac crest, and cartilage or lower ribs
INSERTION : linea alba and pubic crest
ACTION : compress abdominopelvic cavity
Internal intercostals
ORIGIN : superior border of each ribs
INSERTION : inferior border of rib above
ACTION : depresses ribs
Diaphragm
ACTION : elevates lower ribs, expands thoracic cavity for breathing
