What is the OHSA?
The Occupational Health and Safety Act
The main purpose of the OHSA is to protect workers from health and safety hazards on the job by:
•Making measures and procedures for dealing with workplace hazards
• Giving responsibility’s for all working parties and giving rights for workers to help establish a strong internal responsibility system (IRS)
• Providing enforcement of the law where compliance has not been achieved voluntarily
Workers Rights:
• The right to know
• The right to participate
• The right to refuse unsafe work
What is an SDSs
Safety Data Sheets are documents that provide info about hazardous products and how to use them safely.
What are some things that SDSs tell us?
• What to expect if you don’t follow the precautions.
• How to recognize symptoms of exposure.
• What to do if emergencies occur.
As an Employer, do I have responsibilities?
Yes. Employers are required to keep all hazardous products an up to date SDS when they enter the workplace.
The SDSs must be available to workers exposed to the hazardous product.
What info do SDSs provide on Identification?
Identification for the product and supplier.
What info do SDSs provide on Hazards?
Physical and health hazards.
What info do SDSs provide on Prevention?
Steps to take to work safely, reduce, or prevent exposure, example proper PPE.
What info do SDSs provide on Response
Appropriate responses in various situations. ( ex. first-aid, fire)
