Ogranic Chemistry Basics Flashcards
Homologous series
-And what do all members of a Series follow m how do they react.
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group but with each successive member differing by Ch2.
-All members follow a general formula and reacts similarly.
What Is the trend in boiling point as the carbon chain length increases?
The boiling point increases
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms responsible to for the characteristic reactions of a compound.
Define an Alkyl group
a hydrcarbon chain with general formula CnH2n+1
-Some times represented as R
Define Aliphatic compounds
a compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains, branched chains or non aromatic rings.
Define Alicyclic compounds
-an aliphatic compound arranged in non aromatic rings, with or without side chains
Saturated compounds
- compounds that contain singe carbon-carbon bonds only
Unsaturated compounds
- contains multiple carbon-carbons - include double carbon bonds and aromatic rings.
Isomers
-The same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms within a molecule- different structural formula
Chain Isomerism
-isomers that have the same molecular formula but different arrangement of carbon skeleton.
-Can be branched or straight chains
Positional Isomers
-have different position of functional group on carbon chain.
Functional group Isomers
-Have same molecular formula but different fuctional group.
