First Person
when the author writes using I, me, we and us. You read as if the author is the main character
Third person
when the author writes using he, his, she, her, they them or the name of the main character
Imagery
when the author writes so that the reader can visualize the story. they paint a picture for you so you can experience the story
Hyperbole
exaggeration. when the author describes something as way bigger or older or after than could even be possible.
Alliteration
when the author uses several words together that start with the same letter sound- usually a consonant
Simile
when the author makes a comparison and uses like or as.
metaphor
when the author makes a comparison by saying that something is another thing. It is not really that other thing but it could be compared to it
personification
when the author gives a non living or non human thing human characteristics
onomatopoeia

synonym
a word that means the same as another word
antonym
a word that means the opposite of something
homonym
a word that sounds the same as another word
synecdoche
when the author uses a part of something to describe the whole thing
mood or atmosphere

plot
the story line. What happens in the story
conflict
when something or someone gets in the way of what you want
the climax
the point in the story of highest excitement. it usually happens near the end of the story and may solve the problem faced by the main character

tries to encourage the reader to feel a certain way, to make you agree with him or her
narrative
used by the author to entertain the audience
expository or informational writing
when the author gives you information about a specific topic

the style of writing the author has chosen to use
stanza
used in poetry to group lines together like a verse in a song
