What is the role of the Official Opposition?
A
The Official Opposition is a constitutional role. The second largest party (currently Labour) is understood to have three main roles: ‘to oppose the government, to criticize it and to seek to replace it’.
The leader of the opposition appoints a team part of the shadow cabinet. This is designed to be the ‘government in waiting’. The deputy leader is appointed by the party (Angela Renna).
