Navigation (N). The specialisation makes the MWO responsible for the safe passage of their vessels including the maintenance of navigation equipment and charts and the pilotage through difficult waters or in and out of port.

What does a Maritime Warfare Officer do?
The career will start as a Junior Maritime Warfare Officer. The role will give me a broad overview of everything that happens within a naval ship and equip you with all the experience required to move up to senior leadership roles. The initial training you receive enables you to conduct watch in a minor ship and eventually you’ll be trained to move up to the Navy’s major fleet units, including Frigates and Destroyers.
Note: All junior Officers on Navy vessels will be required to keep Officer of the Day (OOD) duties. This involves acting as the Commanding Officer’s (CO) representative over a 24 hour period, being directly responsible for the safety and security of the ship and personnel onboard.

Huon Class: Minehunter ship. 6 in operation. Crew of 40+
Armidale Class: Patrol boat. 13 in operation. Crew of 20+

IET is Located at HMAS Watson in Sydney near Sydney Harbour. The course goes for 18 months over 4 phases
Phase 1 - 9 Weeks
Phase 2 - 18 Weeks
Phase 3 - 18 weeks + 20 Weeks
Phase 4 - 28 Weeks

Canberra Class: Landing Helicopter Dock. 2 in operation. Crew of 350+ Troop capacity of 1000+. 8-18 helicopters 110+ vehicles
Collins: Submarine. Crew of 50+

Define the Initial Military Training
Initial Military trainging comprised of the 22 week New Entry Officers Course at HMAS Cresswell in Jervis Bay NSW. South of Sydney and just East of Canberra.
Coursework composed of:
Drill and Ceremonial, Small arms, Officer Development, Oral and written communications, Navy Organisation, Management and Leadership, OOD duties, Swim test, Adventure Cruise.

Define the coursework of the Initial Employment Training
Phase 1 - 9 Weeks.
based at HMAS Watson. Basic Navigation and Mariner skills. Teaches the basics of MWO role.
Phase 2 - 18 Weeks
Based on board a Major Fleet Unit (such as a frigate) An overview of of all departments and sub specialist areas. Officer of the Day duties, Capability Evidence Journal, culminates in 3 weeks of Mariner Skills Board exams.
Phase 3 - 18 weeks + 20 Weeks
Phase 4 - 28 Weeks
