George and Lennie are on their way to their new job at the ranch. Lennie here is presented as clueless, since he always needs to be instructced by his friend george, and obeys george and is also presented as more friendly due to his softer appearance in comparison to Georges more sharp appearance. Lennie gets scolded by george for killing a pet mouse, but he just wanted to have something to pet, perhaps for anxiety. The setting is described as idyllic, utopia, peaceful and overall a fairy tale, which successfully establishes one of the main themes such as ‘The American Dream’.
