Curley’s wife: dreams

A

“She looked up at Lenny and made a small grand gesture to show she could act” - puts her below Lenny, like she is trying to prove herself to him, which is really sad because he is a very low down character and shows that even though she is more intelligent, being a woman automatically puts her below Lenny. “Small and grand”juxtaposed also creates an odd comical effect. “To show” shows that she feels the need to prove herself which makes the reader feel sorry for her rather than impressed as she intended.

Candy quotes

A

Vessel for themes
Gossip eyes for audience not necessarily steinbecks but he obviously thinks candy is a valid first impression. “ tart” “ don’t tell curley”
Injured fears. “ carried the push broom in his left hand” “they’ll can me purty soon”
Candy and his dog, friendship but also negative shows the helplessness of the American dream “ he was the best sheepdog I ever had”
Loneliness he feels safer when George is taking down Curley’s wife “ he felt safe now he had drawn a derogatory statement from George”
Dreams give him the power to be like Slim “he was master of the situation” “he said gently”
Dream goes back to beginning
“ he covered his face with his arm”- reduced to a child even though ironically he still has to face the fact he is old.
“ old candy”
“ eyes blinded with tears” he can’t see the dream anymore
“ he is left behind again” cyclic
“ old candy lay down in the hay”
Like his dog
