quote #4
‘Lennie, who had been watching him, imitated George’
‘covered his face with his huge paws + bleated’
This shows Lennie is feeling terrified- he is covering his eyes like a child. “Huge paws” describes him in terms of a bear, an animal that is characterised as being dangerous, strong and vicious. However, in the same sentence Steinbeck uses the word choice “bleated” which is a noise associated with lambs and gentle creatures.
‘uh-uh, jus’ a dead mouse, George, I didn’t kill it, honest! I found it, I found it dead’ - Lennie
suggests Lennie’s killed animals before - first hint something isn’t right, maybe he’s too strong for his own good, he’s scared of getting into trouble from George
‘an’ live off the fatta the lan’’ Lennie shouted ‘an’ have rabbits’ - Lennie
‘live off the fatta the lan’ means living off of what the land provides, the rabbits represent a feeling of comfort + love to Lenny, like the mice Lennie may accidently kill the rabbits though, as Lennie accidently kills animals, this hints that their dream may not come true
‘Lennie, who had been watching him, imitated George’
Lennie imitates George as he looks up to him/ sees him as a father figure + a role model, he looks to him to see how to behave, Lennie respects + trusts George
