Verbal Irony
A statement that has multiple meanings.
Ex: The weather outside is absolutely lovely (It’s storming)
Dramatic Irony
A turn of events that is expected by the reader, but not the characters
Ex: The reader knows there is a shark underneath the water, but the person swimming doesn’t
Situational Irony
A turn of events that is completely unexpected by the reader and the characters.
Ex: A firefighter’s house is on fire, you wouldn’t expect that
Abhor
To feel hatred or disgust toward
Ex: I abhor cheese
Espouse
To choose and follow a theory, idea, policy, etc.
Ex: She espouses the Environmental Detrimation theory
Goad
To urgent on as if with a pointed stick
Ex: The farmer was goading the bulls
Toil
To work hard
Ex: I love to toil
Beget
To have children
Ex: The couple started to beget in Greenville
Sluggard
An idle slothful person
Ex: She is a sluggard
Hale
Exhibiting or resorted to vigorous good health (Being healthy)
Ex: Today Sadie was looking hale
Libation
The act of pouring a liquid offering as a religious ceremony
Ex: The libation happened at the church yesterday
Litany
A prayer led by clergy (priest/pastor) with responses from the congregation
Ex: For youth Sunday I will say the litany
Behoove
To be appropriate or necessary
Ex: You said it would behoove me to ask questions - so what does that mean?
Bane
Something causing misery or death
Ex: You are the bane of my existence
Slay
To kill intentionally and with premeditation
Ex: Slay the dragon and you will win my heart
Impious
Lacking piety or reverence for a god
Ex: She was being impious with her offering towards Zeus
Boon
Something that is desirable, favorable, or beneficial
Ex: The Oracle was boon
Woe
Misery resulting from affliction
Ex: Woe is me
Adjure
To command solemnly
Ex: The judge adjured the meeting
