Odontogenic Infection/Trauma Flashcards
What drug continues to be effective for infections due to oral flora?
penicillin
Ratio of anaerobes:aerobes in odontogenic abscesses?
10:1 - synergistic
Four most common organisms in OD infections in healthy patients?
- streptococci
- peptostreptococcus
- bacterioides
- fusobacterium
What organisms increase in colonization with AB Tx, hospitalization and immunosuppressants?
Gram negative
Why is anti-septic prep not recommended in facial soft tissue wound treatment?
beta dine can cause cell death and worsening of scars (also, bacteriostatic/antibiotic solutions do not improve outcome) –> saline is sufficient for irrigation
Most common pathogen in cat/dog bite wound infections?

- Active = five doses to deltoid
Common presentation and associated organism of cat scratch disease?
- chronic lymphadenitis, cervical
- Bartonella henslae
Progression of cat scratch disease?
- may spontaneously resolve in 6 weeks if confined to cervical node
- may cause parotitis
- CNS involvement may develop weeks after lymphadenopathy
Population associated with mandibular fractures?
- male in 2-3 decades of life
How is chronic osteomyelitis treated?
- surgical disease
- infected/necrotic bone is resected followed by IV AB
