Odema Flashcards
what is odema
water retention in system carrying pulmonary or perpheral odema
examples of thiazide diuretics
Bendroflumethiazide
Indapamide
MoA of thiazide diuretic
inhibit Na reabsorption at beginning of distal convoluted tubule
duration of thiazide diuretic
last up to 24hr needs to be taken morning to avoid sleep disruption
examples of loop diuretics
furosemide
bumetanide
torasemide
MoA of loop diuretics
-inhibit reabsorption from ascending limb of loop of henle
when is loop diuretic used
used pulmonary odema due to left ventricular failure
duration of loop diuretic
lasts 6hr can be BD without interfering sleep
examples of k+ sparing diuretics
- amiloride
- triamterene (blue urine)
- spironolactone + eplerenone
MoA of amiloride + triamterene
(K+ sparing diuretics)
prevent Na rebasorption from distal tubule collecting duct
MoA of aldosterone antagonists
(K+ sparing diuretics)
inhibit k secretion distal tubule collecting duct
when should aldosterone antagonists be stopped
stop if pt = dehydration due to vomiting and or diarrhoea
what should be avoided when pt = aldosterone antagonists
K+ supplements
what is s/e of all diuretics
all induce hyponatraemia and hypomagnesaemia
s/e of loop + thiazide diuretics
- hypokalaemia
- exacerbate diabetes
- loop = excaerbates gout
- hypotension
