What is diplopia?
Double vision
What is jerk nystagmus?
involuntary, rhythmic moving of the eyes that can be vertical, horizontal or rotary.
Lasts for several beats to be significant.
What is pendular nystagmus?
eye movements of similar size and speed in both directions
Physiological nystagmus
normal phenomenon where the eyes move at extremes of lateral gaze or when looking out of a moving train
How to test the function of these cranial nerves
Ask patient to follow finger from the midline and slowly draw a H shape in the air (within 30 degrees of the midline)
Look for nystagmus and diplopia
Before testing the eye movements, you should ask…
“do you have any blurred or double vision at the moment?”
