complication of blunt injury to the eye
- laceration and lid contusion
- subconjunctival hemorrhage
- secondary glaucoma
- traumatic iridocyclitis
- hyphaemia
- laceration of the lens
- retinal detachment
- vitreous hemorrhage
- rupture of the base of the orbit(blow out fracture)
- optic nerve (rare)
- corneal or scleral laceration
what is hyphemia
blood in the anterior chamber with fluid level
one important rule in management of eyelid laceration
do not cut any tissue even if they look necrotic
give 5 non traumatic ocular emergencies
- acute angle closure glaucoma
- corneal infections
- endophthalmitis(post op)
- retinal detachment (regmatogenous type)
- severe purulent conjunctivitis
what is hypopium
collection of pus in the anterior chamber
complication of corneal infections
- endophthalmitis
- corneal perforation
- phthisis bulbi
what is phthisis bulbi
it refers to shrunken disrganised non functioning eyeball
what is opthalmia neonatorium?
it is severe bacterial infection of the eyes of infants within the first four weeks postnatal
common infections responsible for ophthalmia neonatorium
neisseria gonorrhea
staphylococcus
chlamydia sp.
management of ophthalmia neonatorium
- intensive irrigation with n/s or any bland liquid
- intensive topical antibiotic
a. 1 drop every 5min in the first hour
b. 1 drop every 15min in the next hour
c. 1 drop every hour
d. review patient and treatment the ff day
e. usually require admission
f. systemic antibiotic are usuallly not given, unless ass with urti.
