Ocular Pharm Flashcards
Two specialized roles of ciliary body in eye
Secretion of aqueous humor and accomodation
SNS effects in the eye
Dilation (mydriasis), relax ciliary muscle (far sightedness), produce aqueous humor and lacrimal secretions
PNS effects in the eye
Constriction (miosis), accommodation (near sightedness) and lacrimal secretions
Pinpoint pupils means what has been taken?
Opiods (block inhibitory in EW nucleus)
If a patient presents with an eye that is dilated what may have occurred?
Rubbing of eye with unknown exogenous anti-muscarinics or have been taken up by lacrimal gland from being put near nose or systemized
Methods of drug route for ocular drugs
Topical (cornea-> aq humor), Subconjuctival, Intraocular (anterior chamber), Intravitreal (retina)
What enzyme are useful for localized activation of pro-drugs in cornea?
Esterases
ADE of anti-muscarinics
Anti-DUMBBELS, inc intraocular presure, stinging and burning
Use of anti-muscarinics
Iritis and uveitis and eye examination (dilation)
Contraindications of anti-muscarinics
Glaucoma and sulfa allergy
Anti-muscarinics
atropine, Homotropine, Tropicamide, cyclopentolate, scopolamine
Prostaglandin analogs
LatanoPROST, TravoPROST, BimatoPROST
ADE of PROSTs
Blurred vision, burning/stinging/itching, permanent brown pigmentation of iris, increased length and thickness of eyelashes (hypertrichosis)
MOA of beta-blockers in glaucoma
Decrease aq humor production (cAMP-PKA) and decrease ocular bloodflow
Do -olols work quickly?
Yes
