October Exams Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural process which could cause death, injury or disruption to humans.
What is a natural disaster?
A natural process that has already happened.
What are destructive plate margins?
When the oceanic plate sinks beneath the continental plate.
What are constructive plate margins.
When two plates move away from each other
What are conservative plate margins?
When two plates rub past each other causing friction.
What is global atmospheric circulation?
When heat is transferred from the equator to the poles by the movement of air.
Why does air move?
Differences in air pressure.
What is the process of global atmospheric circulation?
- The sun warms the earth at the equator causing air to rise. This creates a low pressure belt.
- As the air rises it cools down and moves away from the equator.
- At 30 degrees north and south of the equator the cool air sinks creating a high pressure belt.
- At 60 degrees north and south of the equator the warmer air rises creating low pressure.
How do tropical storms develop?
They develop between 5 and 30 degrees north and south of the equator when the sea temperature is 27 degrees and above and when the wind shear is low.
The warm surface water evaporates, rises and condenses into clouds which release great amounts of energy which produce storms.
What are the causes of climate change?
Orbital changes, volcanic activity, deforestation, burning fossil fuels.
What are the effects of climate change?
Glaciers shrink, sea level rises.
What are some ways to manage climate change?
Carbon capture, planting trees, international agreements.
What are epiphytes?
Plants that grow on other living plants.
What are tropical rainforest adaptations?
Buttress roots - supports the tree
Smooth thin bark - helps water to run down
Plants drop their leaves all year so they can continue growing all year round.
What are the reasons for deforestation in the Amazon?
Commercial farming, subsistence farming, commercial logging,
