What is Photovoice?
a process by which people identify, represent, and enhance their community through a specific photographic technique. Participants: 1. take pictures that are meaningful to them 2. reflect on meaning of the images and critically discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their social or physical env. rep in their photos 3. advocate for chance by communicating what the pictures revealed to those who influence program dev and policy

Photovoice methods: Reflection (5)
- after photos developed, bring participants together in a focus group
- have them select their most important pictures to reflect upon
- develop probing questions as a guide for fostering critical discussion of the photos once a person presents why they took the photo
- record or somehow document this discussion
- can be used as a supporting story or brief blurb when using photographs for change
Photovoice Methods: Put into Practice (4)
- submit pictures with a story to a local paper
- hold a gallery exhibition and invite policymakers
- hold a town hall meeting to present and foster further discussion
- use in legislative hearings
