Oceans Flashcards
Salinity
Measure of the mass of dissolved salts in a mass of water
Basin
Area of subsidence, region if low elevation
Salts
Five elements, compound account for 99% of seawater! chlorine, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, calcium, potassium, other- found in seawater
Surface current
Wind-driven current. Fast. Carry water horizontally, prevailing winds influence current formation
Density currents
Move water down and up, current moves towards polar area, water cools. Seawater freezes, and the salt in it is left to sink cause of density. Upwelling later brings it to surface
Upwelling
Vertical movement of water towards oceans. Water forced to surface after wind slowly pushes top water away. Takes 1000 yrs to get to equator. Brings nutrients up
Wave
Water moves in wave motion. Caused by wind.
Crest
Top
Trough
Bottom
Wavelength
Horizontal distance from crest to crest and trough to trough
Wave height
Distance vertically from crest to trough
Breaker
When wave base cannot support crest, and it collapses
Tide
Periodic rise and fall of the oceans surface caused by the gravitational force between Earth and the Moon, and between Earth and the sun
Tidal range
Difference in water level between a high tide and a Lowtide
Spring Tide
This is the greatest title range which occurs when Earth, the moon, and sun form a straight line
