OCEANS Flashcards
What is a habitat?
Special place in community where plants or animals live.
What is an ecosystem?
Organisms that create its own food using energy from sunlight.
What is a consumer?
Organism that needs to eat other organisms to survive.
What are examples of eco-systems?
Forest, Tundra, Desert, Freshwater, Ocean, Grassland and Alpine.
What is a food chain?
Basic network showing how energy and nutrients flow linearly through an energy pyramid.
What is a food web?
Shows how energy and nutrients move through an all ecosystem.
Define Adaptions
Inherited characteristics which enable organism to survive/reproduce more effectively.
What is a structural adaption?
Unique features of the body that help animal to survive in its environment like wings and tails.
What is a physiological adaption?
Unique processes inside the body that help animal to survive in its environment like chemical and metabolism changes.
What is behavioral adaption?
Unique actions taken that help the animal to survive in its environment like how they move and how they communicate with each other.
Define interdependence?
Organisms depend on each other for survival.
Define Biomagnification?
Toxin build up and affects the top of the food chain.
Define Bioaccumulation?
Toxin build up and affects the organism.
How can populations increase?
More food, more reproduction, increase of predators, healthy organisms, human conservation.
How can populations decrease?
Disease, loss of food source, death, human hunting.
