Oceans Flashcards
A line of latitude about 23.5 degrees North of the equator:
Tropic of Cancer
A line of latitude about 23.5 degrees South of the equator:
Tropic of Capricorn
A marshy or muddy area that is covered and uncovered by the rise and fall of the tide, lacks plant life:
Tidal Flat
Describing area where organisms live in the open ocean:
Pelagic
Grasses found in the saltwater marsh:
Spartina
Temperature zone in water where temperatures drop very quickly (due to lack on sunlight penetrating to that depth), often matches up with the mesopelagic zone:
Thermocline
Zone of ocean away from the shore, the regions of the open sea that lie beyond and between the continental shelves:
Oceanic Zone
Zone of the ocean near the shore:
Neritic Zone
Part of the pelagic environment between 200 and 1000 m; zone between light and dark, light intensity too low for photosynthesis, (often times matches up with thermocline):
Mesopelagic Zone
Deepest parts of the oceans, in the trenches:
Hadal Zone
The “Abyss.” No light and near freezing temperatures. Below 4,000 m deep:
Abyssopelagic Zone
The pelagic environment from a depth of 1000 m to 4000 m. No sunlight at all (aphotic zone):
Bathypelagic Zone
Part of the pelagic environment from the surface to 200 m. Plenty of sunlight to promote photosynthesis:
Epipelagic Zone
Which vocabulary words mark out the tropical areas of our oceans?
Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn
Place the zones of the ocean in order from surface to deepest (5):
- Epipelagic
- Mesopelagic
- Bathypelagic
- Abyssopelagic
- Hadal
