oceans Flashcards
pacific ocean
it is the largest and deepest ocean of the 5. it is boarded by the continents of Asia and Oceania in the west and the Americas on the east it is shrinking it contains thee great barrier reef.
Atlantic ocean
second largest of the oceans it lies between Europe and Africa in the east it is connected to all the other oceans
Indiana ocean
the third largest bounded by Asia to the north Africa to the west and Australian to the east. it has limited marine life due to high water temps making it the warmest in the world
arctic ocean
the smallest and shallowest of the oceans it is the coldest ocean its located in the northern hemisphere it borders the Eurasian and north American continents and surround Greenland and several islands.
southern ocean
it surrounds antarctica
it ranks 4th in size
despite the cold
salinity
A measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid
surface zone
The warm top layer of the ocean water. It can extend to 300 M below sea. sunlight heats the top 100m to the surface zone. surface currents mix the heated water with cooler water below.
thermocline
the second layer of ocean. it can extend from 300m below sea level to about 700m below sea level. in the thermocline, temperature drops with increased depth faster than is dose in the other two zones.
deep zone
the bottom layer that extends from the base of the thermocline to the bottom of the ocean, the temperature in this zone can range from 1 degree c to 3 degrees c
water cycle
is the continuous movement of the water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean.
evaporation
the sun heats liquid water, causing it to rise into the atmosphere as the water vapor. this physical change from a liquid to a gas is called evaporation. water evaporation directly from oceans, lakes, rivers, falling rain, plants, animals, and other sources.
condensation
as water vapor rises into the atmosphere. it cools and interacts with dust particles. eventually, the water vapor turns to liquids water. this change form a gas liquid is called condensation.
precipitation
when water droplets become heavy enough, they fall back to earths surface as precipitation. precipitation is solid or liquid water that falls to earth. most precipitation falls directly back into the ocean.
continental shelf
the gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the shoreline the continental slope
continental slope
the steeply inclined section of the continental margin located between the continental rise and the continental shelf
