Oceans Flashcards
Oceanography
Study of all aspects of ocean
Ocean basin
Anywhere on earth
Salinity
Dissolved salt content of a body of water
Marine
cover more than 70% of the surface of the Earth and account for more than 97% of Earth’s water supply and 90% of habitable space on Earth. Marine
Upwelling
a process in which deep, cold water rises toward the surface.
Estuary
tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream.
Abyssal pain
a flat region of the ocean floor, usually at the base of a continental rise, where slope is less than 1:1000
Continental shelf
The sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean
Continental slope
the slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor.
Mid-ocean ridge
A mid-ocean ridge is a seafloor mountain system formed by plate tectonics

Ocean trench
Oceanic trenches are prominent long, narrow topographic depressions of the ocean floor

Seamount
A seamount is a large geologic landform that rises from the ocean floor that does not reach to the water’s surface, and thus is not an island
