Describe how the OTEC system works
A
A closed cycle with ammonia, propane or freon as the working fluid. A heat exchanger evaporates the fluid which drives a gas turbine which is connected to an electrical generator. The fluid is condensed by pumping cold water from the depths of the sea.

Why is there a low thermal efficiency?
A
The temperature differences are so small. If a large power output is required there needs to be large mass flow rates.

What are the environmental impacts of OTEC?
A
The only adverse local effect is the potential interference with fishing. If exploited on a large scale, OTEC may influence patterns of water increment in the oceans.
