Ocean Navigation - Meteorology (Atmosphere) Flashcards
What’s is the composition of the earth’s atmosphere?
Nitrogen - 78.09%
Oxygen - 20.95%
Argon - 0.93%
Carbon Dioxide - 0.03%
What happens to air pressure and air density as altitude increases?
Both air pressure and air density decrease
What is average air pressure at sea level?
Around 1000mb
What is Conduction?
Heat transfers between objects by direct contact
What is Convection?
Heat transfers within a fluid
What is Radiation?
Heat transfers through electromagnetic waves
What is Dew Point?
The temperature at which a particular sample of air becomes saturated
What is Specific heat?
Amount of heat required to change temperature
What is Latent heat?
Amount of heat required to change state
Describe the Tropopause
Upper boundary to Troposphere, varies in altitude from 8km at the poles to 18km at the equator, temperature increases above this level (Invesrsion)
What is Advection?
Air moving horizontally carries energy from area to area
What is evaporation?
Water changing state to water vapour, latent heat is absorbed
What is condensation?
Water vapour changing state to Water, latent heat is released
Because of Diurnal variation, when is temperature minimum and maximum?
Minimum at dawn, maximum during the afternoon
What is Absolute Humidity?
Weight of water vapour present in the atmosphere
