ocean man Flashcards
pacific
it’s the biggest ocean
Atlantic
it covers 20% of the surface
Indian ocean
it’s asymmetric
arctic
it’s frozen
southern ocean
60 degrees south
Salinity
Salinity is the saltiness or amount of salt dissolved in a body of water, called saline water.
surface zone
a the uppermost level of the land or sea
Thermocline
a steep temperature gradient in a body of water such as a lake, marked by a layer above and below which the water is at different temperatures.
deep zone
extending or situated relatively far down from a surface.
water cycle
The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or the hydrological cycle, is a biogeochemical cycle that describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth.
Evaporation
Evaporation is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gas phase. High concentration of the evaporating substance in the surrounding gas significantly slows down evaporation, such as when humidity affects rate of evaporation of water.
Condensation
Condensation is the change of the state of matter from the gas phase into the liquid phase, and is the reverse of vaporization. The word most often refers to the water cycle
Precipitation
In meteorology, precipitation is any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that falls under gravitational pull from clouds. The main forms of precipitation include drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, ice pellets, graupel and hail.
continental shelf
A continental shelf is a portion of a continent that is submerged under an area of relatively shallow water, known as a shelf sea. Much of these shelves were exposed by drops in sea level during glacial periods. The shelf surrounding an island is known as an insular shelf
continental slope
A continental shelf is a portion of a continent that is submerged under an area of relatively shallow water, known as a shelf sea.
continental rise
The continental rise is a low-relief zone of accumulated sediments that lies between the continental slope and the abyssal plain.
abyssal plain
An abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3,000 metres and 6,000 metres
mid-ocean ridge
A mid-ocean ridge is a seafloor mountain system formed by plate tectonics. I
rift valley
A rift valley is a linear shaped lowland between several highlands or mountain ranges created by the action of a geologic rift.
Seamount
A seamount is a large geologic landform that rises from the ocean floor that does not reach to the water’s surface
ocean trench
Oceanic trenches are prominent, long, narrow topographic depressions of the ocean floor
Plankton
Plankton are the diverse collection of organisms found in water that are unable to propel themselves against a current.
Nekton
Nekton or necton refers to the actively swimming aquatic organisms in a body of water.
benthos
Benthos refers to organisms living on the bottom or associated with substrata. Terms synonymous with benthic algae are Periphyton and Aufwuchs.
