OCD definition
A
Characterized by recurrent obsessional thoughts or compulsive acts which may cause significant functional impairment and distress.

Risk factors of OCD - 4
A
- Family history
- Age
- Environmental Factors e.g. streptococcal infection in children
- Pregnancy and postnatal period

Complications of OCD 3
A
- Reduced quality of life, may affect relationships, ability to work and daily life
- Dermatitis - due to excess handwashing
- self-harm and suicide

Which OCD patients should be referred for specialist assessment - 6
A
- ‘severe’ OCD
- suicide risks
- severe self-neglect
- Significant co-morbidity e.g. depression, anorexia nervosa or schizophrenia
- Under 18
- treatments are not helping

A
Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale - highest score is 40
8-15 - Mild
16-23 - Moderate
24-31 - Severe
32-40 - Extremely Severe OCD

A
- Talking therapy referral

- Intensive CBT
- SSRI
- Clomiphramine (tricyclic)

- secondary care mental health team referral
- Combined SSRI and CBT treatment
