Aetiology

A

Vascular ischemia (lack of blood supply)
—- diabetes mellitus and hypertension can cause ischemic changes in the nerve and are the most systemic causes of acquired nerve palsy

Intracranial neoplasm

Haemorrhage

Congenital (birth)

Aneurysm of the posterior communicating artery ( most common)

Infarction of the 3rd cranial nerve (diabetes or atheroma)

Coning of the temporal lobe

Midbrain infarction

Midbrain tumour

Trauma (12% of cases)

Can be idiopathic
