Occlusion and restorations Flashcards
What is the working side in excursions?
Side the teeth move to
Describe mutually protective
In ICP, molars take most of the load
In excursion = anterior/canine guidance
What are functional cusps?
Cusps that occlude with opposing teeth in centric occlusion
What are guiding cusps?
Cusps that do not occlude with opposing teeth in centric occlusion
Function of guiding cusps?
Contain the food
Function of marginal ridge?
Deflect food away from packing in the tooth
Generally what cusps are the functional cusp?
Maxillary = palatal Mandibular = labial
Generally what cusps are the guiding cusp?
Maxillary = buccal Mandibular = lingual
Function of functional cusp?
Ensure adequate vertical dimension is maintained
Why is it important to look at patients occlusion before restorations?
Need to replicate the same point of contacts and match the morphological accuracy
What is the most important feature to reproduce in restorations?
Ridges to deflect the food
Most likely cause of failure for an amalgam restoration that has been there for a long time?
Occlusion - heavy forces have caused it to break.
when it was first fitted it met occlusion, but occlusion changes over time
How can you check if it is occlusion causing failure of a restoration?
Mark up ICP and excursion using articulating paper - see if there are any RCP’s
What is often a good treatment for a failed restoration due to occlusion?
Shortening the opposing cusp so the restorative interface isn’t overloaded
What is fremitus?
Vibration or movement of teeth when teeth come into contact
