Occlusion 1 Flashcards
What is intercuspal position?
how do you record it on wax?
the relationship of the teeth when they are maximally interdigitated
bite all the way through
What is retruded contact position ?
the first tooth to contact on the retruded arc of closure
\
What position does the mandible close in ?
terminal hinge axis position
what is centric relation ?
an orthopedic position indépendant of tooth contact
the condyle articulates in the anterior-superior position
against the posterior slopes of the articular eminence
when is centric relation commonly used?
reorganising occlusion
what is over jet
overlap in a horizontal plane
what is overbite
overlap on a vertical plane
what is resting occlusal dimension
any 2 points measured with the presence of freeway space
this will be effected by posture
what is freeway space?
space measured between teeth and mandible at rest
mandibular movement, what is
- rotation
- translation
R- the movement about an axis
T- bodily movement of mandible in any direction- protrusive or lateral
What is the working side?
The side the mandible moves towards on lateral excursive movements
the condyle on this side is vertically rotated
What is the non working side
the side the mandible moves away from on lateral excursion
progressive side shift is in the path on non-working side
what is Bennet angle ?
the angle formed between the sagittal plane and the average path of the advancing condyle as viewed in the horizontal plane during lateral mandible movements
if no movement what is bennets angle
0 degrees
what is the condylar guidance angle ?
Angle between protrusive condylar path and a reference horizontal as the condylar head translates down the articular eminence
what does the condylar guidance angle relate to?
The articulators condylar guidance angle
what is the retruded arc of closure?
the rotational movement of the mandible when the condyles are seated in centric rotation
Anterior(protrusive) guidance
the influence of the contacting anterior teeth limiting mandibular movements
What is canine guidance?
excursive movements of the mandible are influenced by the horizontal and vertical overlap of the canine teeth which disclose the posterior teeth
what is group function?
multiple contacts between the mandibular and maxillary teeth in lateral movement on the working side.
simultaneous contact of multiple teeth act as a group to distribute occlusal force
what is deflective contact ?
An occlusal contact which alters the direction of mandibular movement during closure into the intercuspal position
what is occlusal interference?
any tooth that inhibits the remaining occluding surfaces from achieving stable contacts
what is a border movement ?
what does it form
the movement of the mandible to any extreme of its range
forms posselts envelope
What is carried out in the functional pathway
chewing and swallowing
What are the posterior occlusal contacts
ie functional and non-functional cusps
Functional cusp = if no cross bite palatal cusp of the maxillary posterior teeth
buccal cusps of the mandibular posterior teeth make contact when closing in ICP with the fossa or the marginal ridge of the opposing teeth
What is mutually protective occlusion / articulation?
the teeth are in groups for mutual protection
on closing into ICP there is bilateral stimulated even contacts on squeezing the posterior teeth together which taken the force down the long-axis of the tooth
other anterior teeth have light contacts and are not subject to heavy biting forces in ICP
in excursive movement the posterior teeth do not touch and are protected
what is canine guidance occlusion-
all posterior tooth movement is guided by canines
this may be due to a large canine ramp
