Obtaining Useful Materials Flashcards
What are catalysts
These are substances that speed up chemical reactions
Biological form: enzymes
What are acid reactions?
Metal+acid-metal salt+hydrogen
What are water reactions?
Metal+water-metal compound (hydroxide)+hydrogen
Give four examples of composites
Concrete. Mongolis. Bricks/carbon fibre. Cermets
What is a composite?
Two or more materials with different properties added together to make a stronger material than the original.
What is a polymer?
A chemical made of VERY long chains of repeating chemical units called monomers. Two different monomers are starch and cellulose.
Polymer=chain
Monomer=link
List the reactivity series
Potassium Sodium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Zinc Iron Tin Lead Copper Silver Gold
What is a ceramic?
An inorganic (not carbon) non metallic solid. Heat and cooling.
Give examples of ceramics
Tiles. Glass. Brick. Plates and vases. Ornaments.
Give 2 types of ceramic
Crystalline (metal oxide) and amorphous (glass based)
What is an exothermic reaction?
When heat is released to the surroundings (CHEMICAL REACTION)
E.g heaters, combustion and the emit reactions
What is an endothermic reaction?
When heat is taken from its surroundings (CHEMICAL REACTION)
E.g photosynthesis and cold packs
Activation energy
Amount of energy to get a reaction to start
Using carbon to extract metal
Metal oxide+carbon-Metal+carbon oxide
