Obtaining Metals Flashcards
Metal + water =>
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Metal + acid =>
Salt + hydrogen
What are displacement reactions redox reactions
The metal is going to become an ion in the salt, by LOOSING electrons (oxidation reaction).
The metal in the salt is going to become an atom by GAINING electrons (reduction reaction
Displacement reaction
If the metal is more reactive than the metal in the salt it will displace the less reactive metal from the salt.
Positive ions
Cations

Potassium , sodium, calcium , magnesium , aluminium, carbon , zinc, iron, tin, ;wad, hydrogen, copper, silver, gold.
Ore
A rock contains enough of a compound to extract a metal for profit
Metals that are found unconfined in the earths crust
Native metals
E.g silver and gold
Why are metals extracted from there ores using heated carbon
Can be extracted if the metal is more reactive than carbon - reduced by electrolysis
Phytomining
plants grow, absorbing the metal. Harvest the plant burn them then dissolve the ash.
Bioleaching
bacteria absorbs metal, the liquid produced (leachate) is collected and electrolysed.
OIL RIG
Oxidation Is Loss of electrons Reduction Is Gain of electrons
Oxidation
When metals form ions they loose electrons
Reduction
When metal ions form pure metals they are being reduced.
