When the researcher hides their aim purpose from the PPS and takes on a false identity.
Define overt observation?
when the researchers reveal what their aims and purpose are to the group.
Limitations of Covert observation
- High levels of deception
- no quantitative data , longer analyse
- high levels of subjectivity
Strengths of covert observation
- Low levels of Hawthorne effect as conducted in artificial environment.
- more costly

Researcher gaining trust from the group to ensure continued pp observation.
