observations Flashcards
what is a naturalistic observation?
a naturalistic observation is an observation on behaviour which occurs in a natural setting with no control over variables
what are the advantages of naturalistic observations?
- good ecological validity
- allows research on sensitive topics
what is a disadvantage of natural observations?
- no control over extraneous variables
what is a controlled observation?
a controlled observation is an observation on behaviour in a specifically created setting with control over variables
what is the advantages of controlled observations?
- control over variables which reduces bias which causes results to be more reliable
what is the disadvantages of a controlled observation?
- lacks ecological validity which reduces generalisation
what is a non-participant observation?
this is where the person remains at a distance from the people observed
what is an advantage of non-participant observation?
easier to remain detached
what is a disadvantage of non-participant observation?
difficult to understand reasons for behaviour
what is a participant observation?
this is when the researcher joins the group they want to observe
what is an advantage of participant observation?
better at understanding behaviour
what is a disadvantage of participant observation?
observation may become less objective
what is an overt observation?
this is when the researcher reveals their presence and obtain permission to observe
what is an advantage of overt observation?
reduces ethical problems
what is a disadvantage of overt observation?
those observed may act different
